The current engine speed is transferred via the crankshaft position/rpm sensor to the engine control unit. The crankshaft position/rpm sensor is designed as a Hall-effect sensor. An incremental wheel indicates the current crankshaft position. The crankshaft position/rpm sensor sends out a square-wave signal as the engine turns over.

I have found a site Leather World Technologies that sells color matched BMW dye, but I do not know the exact color code of the interior. The site lists three different "blacks"; Charcoal - 0519, Black - 917, and Jet Black - 0523.

Thank you for posting that wiring color on your 97 E39 is different then the online schematic. My E39 has a production date of 3/98, and it has the same color sensor wires of Red / Blue Stripe & Brown wire as your BMW has to the two prong sensor connector. My other sensor that I have plugged into air pump vacuum control valve by Peirburg has a

Shielding prevents the wire from hearing electrical interference given off from the alternator and a few other electrical components that contain motors.
