That's why game treats you an NPC when you change player to an NPC model. Hashes are generated by the game within a name and they are used by game scripts. So the only way to make game treat your active model as a character you want is to change a generated hash to the hash of the character.
Idk if it's something I messed up, but it seems like some ped models just cannot be replaced. The model I was testing with was 0x8674D5FC which has heavy spawns along vinewood boulevard. No matter what I did I could not get that model to swap on passive NPCs. The swap did happen when spawning it manually though. Not stirred. The reason why you can't play as a ped and continue through missions is because of the multiple protagonist system. Depending on what character you play as will decide whether or not certain scripts are available to you. Trevor can't play Michael's missions, Franklin can't do the gun running missions. Etc.
